My Dream

Last night I dreamt of a magnificent garden.

This garden had lots of beautiful flowers which made this place very special. Standing in the middle of this garden reminded me of the colours of the rainbow because everywhere I looked there were all sorts of colourful good looking flowers. Butterflies and bees are also decorating the garden.

Walking around this garden I could see many flowers which would be suitable for different occasions. Red, white and pink roses are just right for a wedding. Dead looking flowers would be good for a funeral. Yellow bright flowers like the sun are perfect flowers that I could give to my best friend.

Sitting amongst these flowers I can hear the wind blowing and the flowers blowing at the same time. I also hear insects moving with excitement and making their own insect noises.

I feel relaxed, calm and happy. I feel this way because no one can bother me as I go deep into my thoughts and reflect on my life.

This is definitely a place that I would want to visit everyday.

My special place is my house because this is a place where I can have fun with my friends.

I have a healthy garden outside and flowers growing. These flowers are filling the air with a wonderful smell that makes you want to stay outside all day.

In my house I feel safe and special because I get to be myself. I also feel comfortable because I am surrounded by lots of love from my family.

I dreamt of a beautiful place. This place is my church. This is a place that looks wonderful and is special to my family and me.

At this place you will hear the priest talking about the might God. I feel happy when I am at this place because I get to learn about my awesome God.

As people are sitting listening to the priest there are women who are busy cooking in the kitchen for the afternoon feast. I can smell K.F.C and it’s coming from the kitchen but I also smell something beautiful. I can smell perfume from people who are sitting around me which reminds me of the smell of beautiful flowers.

As the church service comes to an end I look around in my church and see lots of happy and joyful faces.

I like this place because I always think deeply about my life and I appreciate the things my family and friends do for me. This is my one and only beautiful place. It can be yours too.

Dreaming of a Beautiful Place

It was a breezy cold night. I yawned till I fell asleep. I was so sleepy that I started dreaming. I dreamt of a romantic beach.

In this beach I see people with their bucket and spades. Family and friends are decorating the sea with shells and it looks like a colourful rainbow shinning brightly. The gold sand is transformed into terrific sandcastles. In my vision I see humongous boats sailing across the sea.

People are relaxing with their kids and enjoying the sun reflecting on the big waves. As you step back the waves come closer and creepier like a tsunami swallowing people with a massive roar. More than five people are diving in with excitement.

In my beautiful place I smell seaweed and coral filling my noise with a nice smell. I also smell sweet candy and delicious food beside me that is making my mouth watery. I suddenly feel hungry.

People are enjoying the smell of the fresh salty water. I think it smells smelly because it makes my nose feel funny.

In my vision I also hear people chatting with excitement and laughter. I also hear the wind howling as loud as a siren.

This beach makes people feel clam and relaxed. I see people looking a bit dizzy from swimming too much in the salty water. Others are looking a little crazy as they are trying to chase the seagulls away from their food. The main thing is that I feel comfortable, safe and glad because I am surrounded by people who love me.

It was a great day at my beautiful place.

People can see the sun shining out like a diamond in the sky. They can also see people swimming and surfing in the beautiful sea water. You can also see people building a sandcastle made out of sand and shells. As you walk pass you can see people coming to relax at this beautiful place. In my beautiful place you can see big boats. The big boats look like a big lion in the water.

You can hear people talking about how wonderful this place is. You can see people listening to the birds singing.

You can feel hot, warm and cold when you are at this place.

You can smell people cooking delicious meals .The cooking smells like my mums fish.

When you are in the water you can taste the salty water. The water makes my tongue feel funny.

I am reporting to you live on Channel 5. There has been a devastating Tsunami that has happened in Japan. The waves were gigantic and it was terrifying for everyone. The hospitals are trying to help the injured but for some it is too late. Lots of people are looking for their friends and family. They are sad because their loved ones have not shown up yet.
The waves of the tsunami were getting bigger and bigger. People have tried to escape by bikes, cars and other vehicles. Most are just praying for safety.
There have been boats and objects going past on the angry waves. Houses with people still inside them have been swept away by the powerful water. Bricks are falling off the buildings that have been devastated by the tsunami. I am seeing people everywhere. There is alot of chaos and panic.

Today I am reporting to you a powerful tsunami has hit Japan. People have seen cars floating on the humungous, angry, violent waves. Lots of children have seen broken cars, boats and other objects.
Thousands of people were racing to the tallest mountain. There has been a huge amount of water and it has gone everywhere. There is alot of chaos happening.
People have heard all kinds of things like big booming sounds and lots of banging noises. People are screaming and shouting. I have heard alot of people praying.
The waves crashing down are loud, loud like a roaring lion. People are scared. Some of them have tried to out run the gigantic waves but they weren't fast enough. They have been swept away.
The humungous, angry, violent waves has damaged almost everything. Cars, boats and buildings have been damaged. There have been damaged signs, power lines trees and houses.

On T.V one news a humongous Tsunami strikes Japan!

Rubbish are floating with the water. Dirt has been carried around. Stuff from houses have been destroyed. As many objects are destroyed the water is getting deeper and deeper. Buildings, power lines are fully damaged. Boats are crushed. Signs have got destroyed and so have cars. Water is spreading fast around this town.

The tsunami sounds like a lion roaring for his lost son. People are also holding their love ones very tight. You can see that people everywhere are frustrated with this tsunami and are praying that their loved ones are safe.

I think that it is important for people to think fast and smart when there is a tsunami because you can get killed if you are slow.

Tonight on Nightline, we are reporting to you live from Japan about a tsunami.

The tsunami looks like total chaos. Cars were falling on the ground. Boats were crashing into houses. People are swept away from the big waves. It was a devastation!

We heard objects splashing into the enormous waves. People were screaming as the tsunami came. The tsunami sounded like a roaring lion. It damaged lots of stuff like buildings, cars and people's boats. Power lines and signs were crashing with people as well as trees.

People are not liking this dangerous tsunami. Everyone is trying to escape the tsunami. Kids are crying and screaming and parents are panicking to save their children. People are confused, sad and afraid.

I think that tsunamis are dangerous and powerful. It is also horrendous because it can destroy many lives and the environment.

Now that the tsunami has finished all you can see is everything floating sadly in the sea.

When a tornado happened in the North Shore there were people flying up and cars went flying up too. There were people running from the tornado and people got hurt and went to the hospital so they could get better.

People felt sad because their houses got destroyed and there cars as well.

The tornado was spinning fast and there was chaos everywhere. People wee running, shouting and crying because of the strong wind and terrifying noises.

Harakeke is a the Maori word for flax. I think harakeke is an amazing native plant. The scientific name for harakeke is Phormium Tenax. You can use harakeke to make many things like a mat, basket, bag or a fan.

Did you know that harakeke can be used as a medicine? This is why this plant is amazing because it heals many sicknesses like a toothache, earache, boils, wounds and many other sicknesses.

I think I would prefer using harakeke as a medicine than the medicine we get from the doctors. Why do I think this? Harakeke is free and you can use it to heal different types of sicknesses.

Harakeke is green and it can remind people of hedgehog spikes. It is long and pointy. The inside blades are the young blades and they are protected by the outside blades.

Before you cut harakeke it is important to say a Karakia to bless the plant so that it can grow stronger. Say thank you to Tane Mahuta when you are saying your Karakia. If there are any left over harakeke you must put it under a bush.

A korowai is a Maori cloak. It is made out of feathers. People in the Maori culture mainly wear a korowai at special occasions with pride and honour.

Making a korowai builds relationships as people work together to make this cloak. A korowai can take more than one year to create because they are mainly hand woven.

My Day Making Butter.

One hot day I was churning the butter, I felt exhausted and I wanted to go swimming with my friends. But my mum said "no". I still had to churn the butter my arms are aching, my hand is sweating drip by drip and it’s a really, really hot day. My forehead was sweating and the butter was getting thick, smooth and creamy. It is getting thick and hard, I looked inside the churn it was finished. I asked my mum if I could go swimming, she said “yes” and I was allowed to swim.

On Thursday afternoon we walked down to the hall to get ready for fishing at Panmure Wharf.When we had been walking for a while I started complaining because it was too far to walk.I saw a bus driving past our class.I heard Susana shouting out, "Can you drive us to the Panmure Wharf?". The bus driver ignored us so we carried on walking. When we got to the wharf I was exhausted! Room 8 had to walk to the wharf first.We were second .I felt nervous. I put my bait in my bait catcher. Finally I put my bait catcher into the water.

My bait fell off! I had to wind up my bait catcher and put some more bait into it. Then I saw Lydia had caught a fish. I felt jealous because I hadn't caught one yet. I then went over to the other side of the wharf. I took my time trying to catch a fish. After a while I felt a tug. It felt amazing! I lifted up my baitcatcher, but it was only water! I was very disappointed.

When it was time to go back to school, we took a shortcut across Dunkirk Reserve. There was heaps of mud on the ground. I got mud on my shoes and feet. When we got back to school, I talked about our fishing trip with my friends.I was still jealous of Lydia! I told my Nan when I got home. She started laughing.

Next time I go fishing I want to make a fishing rod because my baitcatcher kept losing my bread into the water and floating away. When I go, I really hope I catch a fish!

On Thursday afternoon the whole excited Senior Syndicate walked to the hall to get ready for fishing. When we were nearly at the wharf I was exhausted and nervous because I had been fishing once before.When we got there we sat down and I put my fishing line in the water. My hands were sore because I was holding the fishing rod too tight.When my hands were better I sat back down and I started to fish.I waited for a fish to come but no fish came but I was having fun with all of my friends and my sister.Then I noticed my fishing line was at the bottom of the sea, so I pulled it up a little so fish could come and eat the bait that was on my hook.Lydia and Malia caught a fish and their fish were big and small.They felt proud and tremendous that they had caught a fish.I took my time fishing and I kept waiting and waiting and waiting for a fish to come and eat my bait.

I had a great time fishing with my school! Next time I will see if I can go fishing with my Mum and Dad at the wharf. I will go in a car though because the walking was long and hard!

I felt brilliant and proud because some people caught fish and some people didn't. Next time I go fishing I will have a bigger hook. I love fishing and will go with my family.

Jungle Drums

Yesterday on Thursday after lunch Mrs Wareham said to pack up. I thought we were going to get told off from Miss Hansell the principal. We lined up and started walking down to the hall. I heard a drumming noise. I knew we weren’t going to get a telling off. When we all got in there were heaps of African drums and we saw three people on the stage. Their names were Lucy, Chewie and Johnny. It was fun because we could drum and not write stories. We all had to do the animal dance, so did the teachers. At the end we stopped drumming and Johnny said a long time ago in Africa they used the drums for telephones and I thought it was cool.

When we got to the hall we heard some noise. Then when we got in the hall there where people drumming and the people that were on the stage there called Rhythm Interactive. Their names were Johnny, Lucy and Chewy. Johnny was funny he was doing jungle dances and he was sweating so was Chewy. Johnny was getting cheeky to Chewy and Johnny said to us did Chewy get cheeky and we shouted “NO”. Johnny was leading the group and showing us some drum beats. I felt amazed because I liked the way that we were all able to join in.

Jungle Drums

Yesterday after lunch room 5,6,7 and 8 had to line up outside to go to the hall. I thought that we were getting into trouble for pushing down the stairs.

When we were outside by the hall, we were all hearing banging sounds. Everyone was trying to think what that noise was in the hall. When room7 were standing at the door, I was so surprised what I saw. There was a row of drums. I sat at the front where Miss Sharma was sitting. All of us had to sit in rows and sit in front of a drum. We were drumming and I was happy. It was fun.

There were three people on the stage in front of us. Their names were Johnny, Lucy and Chewie. I thought that Johnny couldn’t talk, but he was just using actions. We all had to look and listen. It was getting noisy, but everyone was smiling even me. Johnny put us in groups and he still did not talk. In our groups we did different rhythms. Johnny, Lucy and Chewie were good at playing the drums.

Finally it was home time. Johnny told us that actions talk louder than words. And he told us what the drums a made out off. He also said that the drums were the first type of cell phone. They used them to tell the other people that enemies were coming. Then we went to our classroom and got our bag and went home.

I think kid’s at Tamaki Primary School should have swimming twice a year because drowning is the third highest cause of death, so it’s a good idea to learn to swim.

Not many people know 41 people have drowned in the last five month’s because some of our beaches are not safe.

Adults should teach kid’s how to swim so they can survive when swimming on their own.They will be able to help themselves or someone else if they get into trouble.

NZ is surrounded by water so we need to learn how to swim.Learning to swim is exciting, fun and could save your life or someone else’s life.

Ms Hansell I hope I have persuaded you to let us go swimming twice a year.So that we can learn more skills.

The Journey of Flora
Flora is a worm. She likes adventures and she lives in Worm Garden. One night a big bird swooped away her house. As the bird flew, other birds got jealous and fought over the house. As the house shook, Flora woke up. She looked outside, she was shocked because Flora was in the air but inside her house she thought as if she were dead. Flora was waiting to go to heaven. She drawed and when she saw a quick flash of light she went outside as the house stopped. The big birds were there, one of the families members ate her tail. Flora said “who cares I can grow another one”. Flora ran because she did not like being with the big birds. Flora ran and ran but she did not see where she was going and she fell out of the big birds nest. Flora thought she was flying . . . . . . . . . . ! BANG ! Flora fell on the ground. Flora did not know where she was. Flora walked for hours until she heard music and then she looked through a pile of leaves and she saw heaps of worms in a Worm City with all of the things you would ever want. Flora made friends with some worms. She got worried about her family and she wanted to go back to Worm Garden. She asked her friends if they know the way to go back to Worm Garden. They all said “no”. Then one of her friends said “yes” and her name is Ruth. Ruth said “my dad has finished his invention that is called the flying car, we can use that to go faster “. “I’ll go get the flying car then” she said again “O.K” said Flora. When Ruth got the flying car they hopped on it. They flew to the sky and when birds came they flew side to side and then they saw Worm Garden and they flew down and Flora saw her parents and they hugged one another and then Flora said “bye” and they felt happy.

Why The Kiwi Can’t Fly

Once upon a time there was a hungry kiwi that lived in a forest with a furious lion. The lion had two mean eyes that glowed in the dark. He lived in a scary cave in the corner of the forest where the rocks tumbled down off the cliff.

One day Kiwi was searching for food in the forest when the lion spied Kiwi’s footprints in the mud. Lion quietly followed the footprints that lead him to the pond. He saw Kiwi eating juicy worms. Kiwi heard a noise so he looked through the leaves and saw the lion’s tail sweeping backwards and forwards under a bush. He knew Lion would be hungry so he ran as fast as he could go. But Lion was very fast. He was faster than Kiwi. Lion reached out and stretched his long sharp claws and got Kiwi’s right wing.

Blood came pouring out. Kiwi screamed as loud as he could. Terrified he tried to fly away but his wing was injured. Lion laughed as Kiwi started to run. He was only teasing the kiwi. He didn’t want to eat him but he was a bully. So because of the mean way that Lion treated Kiwi, kiwi’s can no longer fly.

A Letter To The Remuera Rotary Club

Dear Remuera Rotary Club
I feel happy and lucky that I was a year 4 because
I got to get a dictionary. I read it at home every
night and I find facts about interesting things.
I turn the facts into my own words and write
information sentences that start with a hook.
A hook makes the facts more interesting when
you are reading them. I have found out that bees
live in little holes and I found out that olden day
ships were made from wood and had sails like
the voyaging waka. My Mum is really happy that
I am practising my writing at home. I bring my
writing to school and show it to my teacher. She
thinks I am clever. Thank you for my dictionary.

Information Report: Early Pacific Sailors

Early Pacific sailors travelled the sea on the large voyaging waka. The sailors came from places like Samoa and Tonga to NZ. This was the start of pacific migration. Its when you leave one country to live in another country.

The boat was large. It could take 50 people at a time. The hull was made from breadfruit wood and the sail from Pandanus Leaves. The ropes were made from the brown hairs on the outside of the coconut and it helped the sailors stay tied to the boat in bad, stormy weather.

The sailors ate banana and taro and the Polynesian explorers went on long trips. They knew they had to find food and water on the way there. Water was carried in large gourds with wooden plugs. Sailors put the gourds behind the boats in the water, to keep the water cool.

When they were close to land, the Tahuna would see changes in wave patterns, water colour, fish, birds and seaweed. As well as this they could smell the land.

The early sailors were brave because they travelled a long way without a map.

Looking After Our Garden

For the last two weeks Room 7 have been looking after the garden. Mrs Kelly has helped us to learn all about how to look after our school garden. We have had to water the plants, take out any weeds and be responsible leaders in the garden at lunchtime and playtime. Some of our plants have grown really tall so we had to tie then to bamboo stakes so that they don’t fall over. We took out the celery and planted beetroot, cabbage, lettuce, tree tomatoes and passionfruit in its place. The kids in our school are lucky because they get to take home some of the vegetables that we have grown. We learnt to take off the lateral branches on the tomato plants so that more tomatoes will grow on the plants. A few days this week it was raining so we didn’t water the garden but we did still have to water the plants in the hot house. To remove plants you need to squeeze the sides and take the vegetable out gently. Part of our job is to put the fruit scraps in the worm farm and then once a week we put the worm juice on the plants that are inside our school so they get stronger.

The Great Fire of London by Jayde

On September 2nd 1666 there was a great big fire in London. It started after a little spark from the oven in a bakery in Pudding Lane landed on some straw and the firewood near by went up in flames. London was ‘tinder dry’ as it had been a long hot summer.

The fire was huge and very, very hot. It travelled though Pudding Lane and grew higher and higher until it spread to all of London. Did you know there where no fire engines in 1666. The trained bands who were like firemen had to use leather buckets, fire hooks, squirts to try to stop the fire.

King Charles ii gave the people of London hope. He helped fight the fire for 30 hours with no sleep and gave gold coins [guineas] to the people who he saw helping.

Four days later when the city had burnt down, the new homeless people set up tents like a camping ground at Moorfields. Are you aware that 100,000 homes and 87 churches were destroyed. Families, who before slept in beds in houses, now slept in the tents while they helped rebuild their city.

Friday was the first day of the Olympics in Beijing, in China. I was holding the flag of NZ. Our team had to wait for two hours before we could go into the stadium. It was boiling. Finally we got to go into the stadium. I was part of the rowing team. When I walked in I was holding our flag, I felt proud and I knew Mum would be proud. I saw exploding fireworks and shining lights that said ‘Welcome to Beijing’. I saw people cheering, clapping, yelling, singing, shouting and dancing. They were having so much fun. I saw the man who ran with the Olympic flame high up in the air. It’s hard to believe there were ninety one thousand people inside the stadium watching me.

8 minutes past 8 on the 8th day of 8th month 2008

The noise was deafening but I didn’t care because I was in the stadium. I felt very, very excited suddenly I saw the Olympic torch getting passed around. It got passed to the last person and he ran around up high in the stadium. That man must have been boiling hot and also proud of being the last man to carry the torch. I could smell gunpowder. I saw bright lights and I thought I would go blind. It was like the greatest Olympic day of my life. I could hear people singing while I watched their show. We had to watch people performing until the countries came in to the stadium. It was so loud because people were clapping and having fun. I was really lucky to get a ticket to watch the opening ceremony.

At the Whare Wananga we had a fantastic time. We did some exciting activities like poi, harakeke and mau rakau, which is movement with a stick. My favourite activity was mau rakau because I enjoyed the movement, it was much easier than I thought. When we ate dinner everyone was saying how wonderful the food was. My favourite food was chop suey and potato bake. I couldn’t stop eating it because it was so scrumptious. After we finished our activities we got ready for bed and Miss Hansell told us a story before we all fell asleep. The next morning we had a delicious breakfast of eggs and spaghetti. When we finished our food we sat down and had a korero with Miss Hansell about what we did and about what we found exciting at the Whare Wananga. I thought it was the activities because they were heaps of fun. At the end Whaea Whetu helped us finish our koru carvings before we went back to class.

I like my Nana’s tree. It is her feijoa tree.
It is at the back of her garden. I like the feijoa tree because I like climbing it and eating the feijoas off the tree. It is humungous and the branches are thick and hard. I like to climb it and pick fruit off the thick and strong tree. It tastes sour and sweet and juicy and best of all yummy.

Four years ago when we were living in Mt Wellington, I had an enormous tree growing at the back of my house. It was a guava tree and it had heaps of red and green coloured fruit growing on it. My brothers and I built a big tree house on the top of the tree. Everyday I would go outside and climb into my tree house to watch the beautiful sun set with all my other friends, but then we moved. I just sat inside my tree house and cried. The last time I climbed tree I could smell its beautiful green leaves and I could feel the hard rough thick bark under my hands and feet. When we hopped in the car I looked back at all those years I had climbed that beautiful tree. When we were backing out of the driveway my fiends came running and were asking me if they could have my tree. I said yes then I started to weep. We were off. Now every time we go to church I see that tree and it looks just the same.
